French Ligue 1 2021-22 predictions: season preview
Last season, Lille won Ligue 1 for the first time in 10 years, ending Paris Saint-Germain’s three years reign as the French champions. The 2021-22 Ligue 1 season is contested among 20 teams, and the team finishing with the most points wins the league.
Ligue 1 teams that finish in the top 2 automatically qualify for UEFA Champions League. The third-placed team enters the third qualifying round of the Champions League before a play-off to reach the group stage. The fourth-placed team and the winner of the Coupe de France qualify for the UEFA Europa League. In cases in which the winner of the Coupe de France finishes in the top 4, the fifth-placed team gets the spot in the Europa League. The fifth or sixth-placed team will qualify for the newly formed UEFA Europa Conference League.
Teams that finish in the bottom two, will automatically be relegated to the Ligue 2. The third relegation spot is decided by a relegation play-off between the 18th-placed team in Ligue 1 and the third-placed team in Ligue 2, whilst the top 2 of Ligue 2 enter Ligue 1.

Les Parisiens finished with 82 points which were just one point behind champions Lille. Paris Saint-Germain won 26 games while scoring the most goals in the league (86) and conceding 28 goals.
Les Parisiens sacked their manager, Thomas Tuchel, in the midst of last season after a fall out with the management. Tuchel took Paris Saint-Germain to the Champions League final the season before and was sacked in December. Paris Saint-Germain announced Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager as he took them to a second-place finish and was knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester City in the semi-final.
Paris Saint-Germain had one of the best summer transfer windows in football history with the arrival of lots of top players on a free transfer. Paris Saint-Germain are one of the strongest teams in the world. The acquisition of Messi already made them the favourite to win Ligue 1 and one of the UEFA Champions League favourites. The front three of Messi, Mbappe and Neymar will be too good for defenders to handle as Les Parisiens also have a very good attacking depth with Di Maria and Icardi.
Lionel Messi is one of the greatest footballers with his ridiculous numbers and ability. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner is still the favourite to win this year’s award after he won the Copa America. The Argentine captain has the most recorded assists (358) as he’s the most. Messi is the fourth-highest goalscorer in football history with 751 goals. He was the highest goalscorer in La Liga last season with 30 goals, overperforming his expected goals of 23.94. Messi is a serial winner and has won the second-most trophies in football history (38). Depay will be a big miss for Lyon as he was their best player last season scoring the most goals for Lyon (20) and providing the most assists (12).

The Monegasques lost a lot of players on a free transfer with Youssef Ait Bennasser, Willem Geubbels, Keita Balde, Anthony Musaba, Antonio Barreca, Pietro Pellegri and Benjamin Lecomte left the club as their contracts expired. Monaco came close last season as they finished with just five points behind champions Lille. The Monegasques will compete for the title this season as they will be looking to win their first Ligue 1 since 2017.

How experts analyse Ligue 1 games for sure predictions
Takebet employs analysts with in-depth knowledge about football that know the best way to disassemble the mass of results and statistics in order to find trends leading to bets of value. We are also knowledgeable about French football and its unique specifics.
The Ligue 1 teams are very physical in their approach and are always strong to compete for both aerial and ground duels. Most squads of the French top flight love to use the width of the field to stretch the opponent as they utilize wing-backs that are high off the pitch trying cut-backs as well as finding pockets of spaces. The defensive midfielders are usually very physical as they control the play and win balls back in cases of a counter-attack.
Some Ligue 1 teams sit deep blocking all passing lanes in a very tight shape with opponents finding it hard to break them. At any opportunity they hit on a fast counter-attack.
Some of the statistics we use in analysing Ligue 1 teams:
- Goals scored and conceded
- Big chances created and conceded
- Expected goals
- Shots on/off-target
- Levels of ball control
These statistics are used alongside head-to-head results, trends of money coming on betting markets, team and player form, the latest league news to drop betting tips (Ligue 1). Probabilities of events derived from this data are compared to betting odds to spot value.
