Precedents and statistics

France and Croatia have faced each other five times since the latter gained independence: France won 3 times while 2 matches ended in draw. The only challenge during a World Cup was the first, in 1998: France overcame Croatia in the semi-final for 2-1, both then won the respective finals.

Team Forms and Recent Results

Deschamps’ team are having an excellent world cup campaign. After deservingly eliminating two strong teams like Argentina and Uruguay, the French have also eliminated Belgium in the semi-finals. The match was close until the end and was only decided through an episode when Umtiti headed in goal from a corner. France are not a spectacular team- despite having great quality - but it is first and foremost compact: the defence is fast and rock solid and they have a complete and balanced midfield and they are deadly in attack when they have space.

France lost against Italy in their last World Cup final in Germany 2006. Everyone remembers that final and the Zizou and Materazzi headbutt incident. This time they do not want to miss the chance and their coach’s experience can make the difference. He won all major trophies as a player and it seems that he is on his way to repeat this success as a coach as well.

Croatia are this World Cup edition’s surprise team. After winning the penalty shootouts against Denmark and Russia, Croatia also defeated England late during the extra time. This time they finished before the shootouts and the extra time was "enough". Perisic and Mandzukic brought the Slavs to heaven: the first World Cup final for Croatia, which became an independent nation only in 1991 . Dalic's team have shown that they has all the right qualities to be a top nation: physical condition, quality and a lot of heart.

Probable formations

Without any disqualified or injured players, France and Croatia could field the same 11 of their respective semi-finals.

France will play with their usual 4-3-3 formation with Pogba, Kanté and Matuidi in midfield. Giroud should be confirmed as their central striker, supported on the sides by the talented duo of Griezmann and Mbappé.

The Slavs should instead field their usual 4-2-3-1 formation. Only the conditions of Strinic and Mandzukic, substituted in the semifinal against England, have to be verified before the game. However it seems that both players will recover. Brozovic, Rakitic and Modric will commend the midfield . The Juventus striker Mandzukic will eventually be partnered by Perisic and - probably by Ante Rebic.

France (4-3-3): Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Kanté, Pogba, Matuidi; Mbappé, Griezmann, Giroud. Coach Deschamps

Croatia (4-2-3-1): Subasic; Vrsaljko, Lovren, Vida, Strinic; Rakitic, Brozovic; Rebic, Modric, Perisic; Mandzukic. Coach Dalic
